Growing green with Agrozone: drain water disinfection for sustainable coconut cultivation

Currently in horticulture, many crops are grown on rock wool. Given the root problems in bell pepper cultivation, people are increasingly switching to coir. Coir is also a wonderful example of reusing sustainable raw materials and financially attractive. Growing green, in other words.

Challenges

From a drain water disinfection point of view, however, cultivation on coconut has challenges. Especially at the beginning of cultivation, the water contains a higher organic load and color. This makes the required transparency (T10) for effective UV treatment almost impossible. Other techniques such as heating and ultra filtration also run into problems.

Disinfection coir drain water

Ozone disinfection does not depend on sufficient transparency. Disinfection of coir drain water is therefore effective. When sizing the ozone installation, the higher organic load of the water is taken into account in advance. Agrozone has successfully applied disinfection of coconut drain water for many years in practice in strawberry cultivation and pot plants. Regular sampling shows that bacteria and fungi/yeasts are sufficiently killed off. Additional advantages are that part of the organic load (and color) is removed and the water is provided with oxygen.

Practical experiences

We have collected the practical experience gained in recent years in a database. We also perform ozone treatments in our own laboratory facility on drain water from different coconut suppliers with possibly different compositions. Based on this collected information we can advise our clients even better in a suitable disinfection solution for coconut drain water.
